There's two types of ways to botnet..

Client / Host booter
IRC

IRC is the worse way to go if you don't want to get caught and Canada and other countries are also against botnets so you can still goto their "Prison" system.

irc is better thandirect link between the botnet and you, at least with an irc its the

victim - irc server - you
with direct connection its
victim - you

i think that irc would be a better way to go, just use a proxy or better a vpn
