well there's always ad block plus and of course open source os's
Ad block plus isn't an anti virus..
Open source OS's ? What does that have to do with anything. ANY OS can get a virus... Windows are just more likely as MOST people use windows, and there's a larger 'market' per se, for malware and shit.
Anti Viruses don't necessarily lower performance if you get a decent one... Perhaps during the actual scan, but it won't kill you to take two hours out of your day to scan (or just leave your computer on over night).
I HIGHLY recommend BitDefender (Total Security)
MS Essentials isn't great, it's light, useful for netbooks, or low-performance computers.
MalwareBytes' AntiMalware is a must have, even if you already have another AV, it's got full AV features in it's FREE version, and a couple additional things in the Pro version which aren't necessarily needed, but quite useful.
Trend micro has great internet security.
Kaspersky and eset are also two highly recommended AVs, but again, my personal recommendation (after using many AVs) is BitDefender.
Then there's other things to deal with :/ I keep a copy of Super Anti Spyware (Portable) on my PC, run it every so often (it's nothing you leave running or anything, so it doesn't lower your performance or w/e). Great tool.
I prefer AVG over BitDefender to be honest. I used to use BitDefender but sometimes its such a whorebag, AVG catches viruses and doesn't piss me off. Works fine.Ad block plus isn't an anti virus..

bitdefender is good but it kills cpu
No..
I have it, just checked all it's processes in task manager, combines it's using about 1% cpu and about 9-10mb of RAM... Which is nothing especially considering it gradually checks all your files really slowly while it's on the in the background, and it's watching the network at the same time + actively scanning any activity taking place (registry changes, attempted installations, any running programs or programs trying to run, etc).
It's also highly configurable to enable/disable any of those features that it has if you find they're using too much cpu/memory.
Of course, it uses a little more juice when an actual scan is going, but just do it over night if you must... Or just do quick scans which don't usually take all too long, although I prefer deep scans.
alright, bitfender it is im installing right now after a compabitlity chek with windows 7 thank you whoisyou!
Avast 5 FTW!
Avira. nuff said.
