Probably a modchip so he can play burnt ps2 games. I know someone who did it to their ps2. He uses gamefly and when he gets the games in he burns them on his computer and mails back the games. Pretty good deal I think.

Yeah you can hack it, at least I have, I get RAM dumps from putting the disc on my computer and dump it from a PS2 Emu and use game shark to put the codes I make in. Of course if you want to play like free games and stuff you need a modchip.
